La Revolución Industrial es el
resultado de la adopción de un nuevo sistema productivo apoyado en el
maquinismo, en la utilización de fuentes de energía nuevas y en la división del
trabajo, lo que determina una serie de transformaciones estructurales en el
proceso de elaboración de bienes que permitirá el tránsito de una situación
estática a otra de crecimiento autoinducido. Esta revolución es simultánea a la
demográfica, agraria, y de los transportes, siendo unas y otras causas y
efectos a la vez. Supone la configuración de una nueva clase social, el proletariado,
y el encumbramiento definitivo de otra, la burguesía. Iniciada en Gran
Bretaña en el último cuarto del siglo XVIII, en Europa cristaliza en la segunda
mitad del siglo siguiente. Como motor tendrá primero la actividad textil
algodonera y después la siderúrgica. Desde una visión clásica la Revolución
Industrial atraviesa tres etapas:

Primera Revolución Industrial o Paleotécnica. De fines del XVIII a
fines del XIX. Era del carbón y vapor, el hierro y las construcciones
mecánicas, los textiles y el ferrocarril.

Segunda Revolución Industrial o neotécnica. Hasta la mitad del
siglo XX. Era del petróleo y la electricidad, el automóvil, avión, las
aleaciones (acero, aluminio), la electromecánica, química y las comunicaciones.

Tercera Revolución Industrial. Era de la electrónica y la informática, la
energía atómica y las actividades terciarias.
